Tunisia: also IBAHRI expresses concerns about the new arbitrary criminal proceedings against Judge Anas Hmedi

News of the IAJ

Following the IAJ Presidency Committee’s declaration on Tunisia and the IAJ President’s letter on the proceedings brought against the President of the Tunisian Magistrates’ Association, Judge Anas Hmedi, also the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute ( IBAHRI)  expressed its concerned about new criminal charges against Judge Anas Hmedi, seen as retaliation for his defence of the rule of law and criticism of Tunisia’s “Conspiracy Case.”

Judge Hmedi is the President of the Association des Magistrats Tunisiens, member of the IAJ.

The case, targeting 37 opposition figures, reflects a broader decline in judicial independence since 2022, including the dismissal of judges and dismantling of safeguards. IBAHRI urges authorities to drop the charges and restore protections for judicial independence.
