With a view to promoting justice and accountability for the international crime of enforced disappearance, this webinar aims to raise awareness and foster a shared understanding of the existing challenges, lessons learnt and good practices in investigating and prosecuting enforced disappearances under universal jurisdiction. In 2024, the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (UN WGEID) undertook a research study to assess the use of universal criminal jurisdiction in cases of enforced disappearance, analysing the applicable conceptual and legal frameworks (and, where appropriate, the loopholes therein), existing challenges, lessons learnt and good practices. The study will be presented in September 2025 at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council. This webinar offers an opportunity to share the findings with the global legal profession.
