The passing of Honorary President Markel

The IAJ mourns the passing of Mr. Ernst Markel, a highly respected Austrian judge whose dedication to justice and integrity left a lasting mark on colleagues around the world.

On March 19, Ernst Markel passed away, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned the esteem and admiration of peers for both his legal expertise and his personal integrity.

Mr. Markel served first as President of the European Association of Judges and then as the 23rd President of the International Association of Judges (IAJ). He was elected in Alicante in February 2003 and led the Association with distinction until November 2004, when he was named Honorary President .

His leadership was characterized by a deep commitment to judicial independence, international cooperation, and the strengthening of democratic principles. Those who had the privilege of working with him remember not only his competence but also his sense of duty.

His passing represents a great loss for the judiciary, both in Austria and internationally.
