“Being a judge in times of pandemic”, an article by EAJ President J. Igreja Matos

News of the IAJ

EAJ President José Igreja Matos has published a very interesting article on the subject: “Being a judge in times of pandemic”.

The COVID-19 emergency brings unprecedented challenges to the Rule of Law principles and to the activity of Judges. Some of the most elementary and vital human rights are severely restricted. Huge efforts must be done in order to avoid that Governments take this emergency (and the consequent fears of people) as a pretext to strenghten in an undue way their powers and excessively restrict human rights. As President Igreja Matos correctly remarks, we must in any case “prevent this crisis from progressing into a Rule of Law catastrophe”.
