Opinion on the Role of Judicial Associations approved by the CCEJ

News of the IAJ

On November 6th, 2020, the Consultative Council of European Judges of the Council of Europe has approved its Opinion No. 23 (2020) on “The role of associations of judges in supporting judicial independence”. The preliminary draft of this Opinion had been prepared by the expert appointed by the Council of Europe, IAJ Honorary President Gerhard REISSNER.

The present Opinion represents a landmark for the affirmation of Judicial Associations at national and international level. It is a very welcomed standard that definitively underlines the crucial importance of judicial associations on promoting judicial independence and upholding the Rule of Law.

The European Association of Judges publicly acknowledges the leading role of CCJE on matters related to the independence, impartiality and competence of judges and encourages all Member States of CoE to observe and follow the recommendations issued on the present Opinion.
