Global Judicial Integrity Network- Comment submission on guide on codes of judicial conduct

News of the IAJ

The Global Judicial Integrity Network is a unique platform for judges and judiciaries and a key outcome of the Judicial Integrity component of UNODC’s Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration. Officially launched in April 2018 at a high-level event in Vienna, the Network aims to create networking opportunities for judges, facilitate information-sharing and dissemination of existing resources, and to respond to existing and emerging challenges related to judicial integrity, for example through the development of various knowledge products. The launch event of the Global Judicial Integrity Network concluded with the adoption of a landmark Declaration on Judicial Integrity. With the Declaration in mind, the Advisory Board of the Global Judicial Integrity Network developed the Network’s 2018-2019 workplan and decided, among other areas, to develop a practical guide on how to develop codes of judicial conduct.

We remind that IAJ and EAJ are actively involved in the initiatives of the Global Judicial Integrity Network. They participated in its creation and members of the Advisory Board are IAJ First Vice President José Manuel Igreja Matos and IAJ Vice President Duro Sessa.

UNODC is now in the process of collecting additional input and comments from the participants of the Global Judicial Integrity Network on the guide and, thus, we would like to invite all interested participants of the Network to: (i) review the draft guide; (ii) provide additional cases and resources, with a view not only to enriching the paper, but also to disseminating the resources via the Network’s online library; and/or (iii) make other recommendations on how to improve the guide, at your earliest convenience but no later than 9 September 2019.

The guide is available on the website of the Global Judicial Integrity Network: https://www.unodc.org/ji/en/restricted/guide-on-how-to-develop-and-implement-a-code-of-judicial-conduct.html. To access this content, please register or log in at https://www.unodc.org/ji/en/registration.html.

You can submit comments through our website via our online query system or by replying to: unodc-judicialintegrity@un.org.

Where applicable, please list the specific portion of the text to which you are referring or please use track changes.

Once the consultation period is over, UNODC will compile the comments received and update the guide. The new text will be presented at the next High-Level Meeting of the Global Judicial Integrity Network, which will take place on 18 and 19 November in Doha, the State of Qatar. For more information about the meeting, please visit https://www.unodc.org/ji/restricted/high-level-event.html?lng=en.

This activity is an opportunity to create a comprehensive document, which could serve as a source of inspiration for judiciaries. Your comments and participation of your jurisdiction are, therefore, highly encouraged.

Thank you for your continuing support to the activities and efforts of the Global Judicial Integrity Network.
